Saudi Arabia has strongly condemned an attack on the U.S. Embassy in Riyadh, asserting its right to take necessary measures, including potential retaliation, to safeguard its security and interests.
In a statement released by its Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Kingdom denounced the Iranian aggression targeting the U.S. diplomatic mission.
The Saudi statement emphasized that such repeated and unwarranted attacks blatantly violate international norms and laws, including the Geneva Conventions of 1949 and the Vienna Convention on Diplomatic Relations of 1961, which grant immunity to diplomatic premises and personnel, even during armed conflicts.
The Kingdom reiterated its unwavering commitment to protecting its territory, citizens, residents, and vital interests and affirmed its right to respond to the aggression.
Earlier, the Saudi Ministry of Defense reported that the U.S. Embassy in Riyadh had been targeted by two drones.
According to initial assessments, the drone attack resulted in a limited fire and minor material damage to the embassy building, said Brigadier General Turki Al-Malki, the ministry's official spokesperson, in a statement.
Saudi Arabia warned that Iran's repeated behavior, despite knowing that the Kingdom would not allow its airspace or territory to be used to target Iran, would further escalate tensions in the region.
