FM, Arab League chief discuss ties, pan-Arab issues
الأنباط - Foreign Minister Ayman Safadi on Sunday discussed with Arab League Secretary-General Ahmed Aboul Gheit ways to cement pan-Arab solidarity, address common challenges and service joint interests.
Aboul Gheit is visiting the Kingdom to present the 2019 Arab Development Work Shield, which was awarded to His Majesty King Abdullah II by the Arab League and its institutions.
In joint press remarks, Aboul Gheit said: "Since His Majesty succeeded in achieving a great leap for the Kingdom in the economic and social development in a very strong way. I came to present to His Majesty this shield approved by the Arab League."
Safadi said that the Arab League is the umbrella of pan-Arab action, which must be strengthened and its role should be fostered to increase its effectiveness in framing pan-Arab action to address common challenges and serve Arab interests, especially in these critical regional circumstances.
"We touched on all the issues that concern most, foremost of which is the Palestinian issue and the danger it faces due to Israel's continued unilateral and illegal actions that undermine the two-state solution and all chances for peace," he added.
He added: "The Arab position on the Palestinian issue, which was confirmed by all the meetings of the Arab League, is based on the fact that fulfilling the rights of the Palestinian people, especially their right to freedom and statehood on Palestinian national territory, with Jerusalem as its capital on pre-June 4, 1967 lines, is the only way to achieve peace."
Al-Safadi pointed out that the talks also touched on Syria, emphasizing the necessity to end the crisis in this Arab country in a manner that preserves Syria's unity and cohesion.
He explained that the Arab role should be more effective in addressing all the crises facing the Arab world and that "our Arab presence in the efforts to address these crises should be more influential."
Safadi continued: "It is unacceptable that the Arab role in these crises remains limited, and I mean here the collective Arab role because at the level of all countries we are working and we all strive to serve our Arab issues."
Aboul Gheit said he is pleased to visit the Kingdom and appreciates the support it gives to the Arab League. He added: "The League is not only a political work but an economic, social and cultural work, and has many aspects that sometimes do not receive the direct attention of the Arab community or the Arab media."
