India Pursues Optimal Trade Deal with U.S. Amid Tariff Uncertainty

India is actively seeking to forge the best possible trade agreement with the United States, aiming to gain a competitive edge amid ongoing uncertainty surrounding Washington's trade policies.

Indian Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal emphasized this commitment, noting that New Delhi is closely monitoring the U.S. approach to tariffs and is eager to capitalize on any beneficial opportunities within a future agreement.

Goyal highlighted that trade and economic partnerships were central to discussions during a working lunch with U.S. Trade Representative Howard Lotnick in New Delhi. This meeting occurred without prior announcement.

The pursuit of a favorable trade deal comes at a time when the future of existing U.S. trade agreements remains unclear, particularly after a U.S. Supreme Court ruling curtailed the executive branch's authority to impose broad, global tariffs.

Previously, the prior administration had announced temporary tariffs, including a 10% levy on all countries, with intentions to raise them to 15%, the maximum legally permissible rate.

In response to these developments, India postponed sending a trade delegation to Washington last week following the Supreme Court's decision. The two nations had previously established a framework for reducing tariffs on Indian goods from 50% to 18%, encompassing punitive tariffs on New Delhi's Russian oil purchases.

While a legal agreement between the two countries had been planned for March, Goyal refrained from specifying a timeline for finalizing any trade deals.
