Meta Revives Smartwatch Ambitions with AI, Dual Cameras

Meta is reportedly reviving its smartwatch project, dubbed "Malibu 2," after shelving the initial version four years ago due to technical challenges and budget cuts, according to reports.

The new smartwatch will feature dual cameras, one front-facing for video calls and another high-resolution rear camera for capturing photos and videos when detached from the strap, according to Reuters.

Meta aims to integrate neural sensors into the wristband, transforming the watch into a controller for its upcoming augmented reality glasses. This technology would enable users to control digital interfaces through subtle hand gestures, potentially revolutionizing how we interact with technology.

Unlike previous attempts, the Meta AI assistant will be central to the new smartwatch. The device will offer on-the-fly generative AI processing, enabling live voice translation, personalized fitness coaching, and real-time object recognition through the camera, Reuters reports.

The move follows the success of Meta's Ray-Ban smart glasses, which demonstrated user willingness to embrace smart communication devices independent of smartphones. Meta seeks to penetrate the standalone wearable device market, aligning with the trend of major tech companies developing smartphone-independent smart glasses.

Meta aims to diversify its device portfolio to reduce reliance on Apple and Google operating systems, Reuters reports. The smartwatch is slated for a global release in the fourth quarter of 2026 at a competitive price.
