U.S. Struck Iran to Forestall Attack on Israel, Rubio Says

The United States launched a preemptive strike against Iran after learning that Israel planned an attack that could have provoked retaliation against American forces, U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio said.

Washington hopes the Iranian people will be able to overthrow the government in Tehran, Rubio added, but the goal of the U.S. mission is to destroy Iran's ballistic missile capabilities and ensure it cannot develop a nuclear weapon.

“We knew that if we didn’t strike before they launched those attacks, we would have suffered greater losses,” Rubio told reporters on Monday.
