Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs and Expatriates, Ayman Safadi, affirmed that reaching a Middle East region free of weapons of mass destruction is a goal for which Jordan works with partners in the international community, and represents a step towards consolidating international peace and security and towards implementing the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons.
Safadi said, during his participation in the meeting of the Stockholm Initiative for Nuclear Disarmament and the Non-Proliferation Treaty, which was held yesterday evening, Tuesday, in New York on the sidelines of the Tenth Review Conference of the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons, that the Kingdom's membership in the Stockholm Initiative, which is the only member of the group from the region It comes from its position in support of the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons, and to work with the States Parties to stress the need to adhere to the Treaty, and to ensure the accession of all States to it.
He stressed, during the Stockholm Initiative meeting, organized by Sweden and Germany, the importance of approaching the issue of nuclear weapons in the Middle East from a broader perspective aimed at creating a region free of all weapons of mass destruction, stressing the need to find solutions to regional crises to avoid the region entering into nuclear arms conflicts, and to focus energies. and efforts towards development rather than armaments.
Jordan participated in all meetings of the ministerial initiative and hosted the third ministerial conference of the initiative in early 2021, a meeting that adopted an expanded work program for the success of the tenth review conference.
In addition, Safadi met yesterday evening in New York, the President of the Swiss Confederation / Minister of Foreign Affairs of Switzerland Ignacio Cassis, in a meeting that discussed ways to strengthen the distinguished relations between the two friendly countries, and the two sides discussed developments on the regional and international arenas and issues of common interest.
Al-Safadi conveyed the greetings of His Majesty King Abdullah II to the Swiss president, stressing the strength of the friendly relations between Jordan and Switzerland, and the importance of the growing bilateral cooperation witnessed by them.
The Swiss foreign minister described the efforts led by His Majesty King Abdullah II to achieve security and stability in the region, and to find a political horizon to achieve a just and comprehensive peace based on the two-state solution.
For his part, Minister Cassis sent his greetings to His Majesty King Abdullah II, stressing the importance of relations with the Kingdom and the continuation of work to develop and develop them in various fields, praising the Kingdom's key role under the leadership of His Majesty in facing regional challenges and achieving security and stability in the region.
On the sidelines of the Tenth Review Conference, Safadi met with New Zealand's Minister of Disarmament Affairs Phil Twiford, and discussed with him the relations of cooperation between the two friendly countries and ways to enhance them, as well as several regional and international issues of common interest.
The two ministers underlined the importance of joint action between the two countries under the leadership of His Majesty the King and Prime Minister of New Zealand Jacinda Ardern to combat terrorism and extremism within the framework of the "Christchurch Call" and the "Aqaba Meetings" initiative.
The meeting stressed the importance of achieving the universality of the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons, and reviewed the challenges facing the non-proliferation regime. It is noteworthy that Safadi participated in a high-level meeting organized by Germany and Sweden, in cooperation with the United Nations Women, headed by the former Jordanian delegate to the United Nations, Dr. Sima Bohouth, on the development of the role of women in promoting international peace and security.
In his intervention, the Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs and Expatriates highlighted the importance of empowering women in the fields of maintaining international peace and security, and increasing their participation in building and making peace.
He pointed to the importance that the Kingdom attaches to empowering women and enhancing their participation in the political and development process, reviewing the legislative procedures and updates adopted by Jordan to increase women's participation in political life.
Last Monday, Safadi delivered Jordan's speech and the statement of the Arab Group at the Tenth Review Conference in light of the Kingdom's assumption of the monthly presidency of the Arab Group at the United Nations.
