AMMAN - The Municipality of Amman has begun actively deploying smart cameras across the capital to monitor traffic flow and enforce regulations, according to Shadi al-Rawabdeh, Director of Traffic Operations at the Amman Municipality.
As many as 550 cameras have already been installed on key roads and intersections throughout the city, with plans to significantly expand the network.
The initiative aims to cover all major axes within Amman's municipal boundaries, primarily focusing on enhancing traffic management.
Al-Rawabdeh noted that the operation is a joint effort between the Amman Municipality and the Traffic Department, with 80% of the cameras dedicated to monitoring traffic conditions and reducing response times to accidents or breakdowns on major routes.
Approximately 20% of the smart camera network will be used to detect and deter traffic violations, leveraging artificial intelligence to identify infractions.
Authorities will focus on major offenses including speeding, running red lights, using mobile phones while driving, failing to wear seatbelts, sudden lane changes, and illegal parking, in addition to environmental violations.
According to al-Rawabdeh, initial data suggests a decline in fatalities, injuries, and accidents since revisions to traffic laws, increased fines, and enhanced enforcement measures were implemented.
