WhatsApp Rolls Out 'Message History' Feature for New Group Members

WhatsApp, owned by Meta, has globally launched its 'Group Message History' feature, designed to bridge the information gap for new members joining existing group chats.

The new feature addresses a common user request by allowing new members to access previous conversations, eliminating the need to rely on guesswork or summaries from long-term participants.

According to reports, the feature offers flexible options for determining the amount of shared information. Users can select to share 25, 50, 75, or even 100 of the most recent messages from the past 14 days.

WhatsApp's help center confirms that the option to share history appears as a toggle switch when a contact is selected to be added to the group.

The shared messages remain protected with end-to-end encryption, generating a new encryption key to ensure secure delivery to the new member without compromising the privacy of other participants.

Shared messages from the past are visually distinguished with a different background or frame to differentiate them from live messages, while clearly displaying the original sender's name.

Once the history is shared, a system notification informs all group members that 'previous messages have been shared with the new member,' ensuring complete transparency.

Group administrators have the ability to disable the feature entirely from the 'Group Permissions' settings, preventing members from sharing the history.

The feature is being rolled out gradually to Android and iOS users worldwide and is expected to reach all users in the coming weeks, reinforcing WhatsApp's position as a collaborative tool beyond simple messaging.
