AMMAN - Jordan has activated its emergency plan and switched to alternative energy sources after a disruption in the supply of natural gas from Mediterranean fields, the state news agency Petra reported on Sunday.

The disruption, linked to regional events, has forced the country to rely on more expensive alternatives to generate electricity, according to Jordan's Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources, Saleh Kharabsheh.

Kharabsheh said the approved emergency plan is being implemented, with the country now using natural gas from a floating vessel, diesel, and heavy fuel oil.

The shift to diesel instead of natural gas is costing the National Electricity Company approximately 1.8 million Jordanian dinars ($2.54 million) per day, Kharabsheh stated.

The minister assured that Jordan possesses sufficient strategic reserves and that there are no technical issues affecting the supply of resources.
