Brazilian football star Neymar marked his return from injury with two goals for Santos in a dramatic 2-1 victory over Vasco da Gama in the Brazilian league. The match was also marred by a heated altercation between Neymar and midfielder Tiago Mendes.
Neymar, who underwent knee surgery in late December, opened the scoring in the 25th minute. However, the celebration was short-lived as Mendes, formerly of Lyon, approached Neymar and appeared to headbutt him, leading to Neymar falling to the ground. The referee issued yellow cards to both players.
The tension between Neymar and Mendes stems from a previous incident in December when Mendes, then playing for Paris Saint-Germain, caused Neymar's knee injury at the Parc des Princes. The tackle forced Neymar to miss several weeks of play.
"He always stirs up controversy and wants to play the tough guy," Neymar commented at halftime. "That's always the case. With all due respect, he's a fool. He injured me once in Paris Saint-Germain, and he promised to do it again today."
Despite the ongoing feud, Neymar secured the win for Santos in the 61st minute. Vasco da Gama had previously equalized through Kauan Barros in the 43rd minute.
Neymar, who recently celebrated his 34th birthday, had hinted at a possible retirement from football after the upcoming World Cup in the United States, Canada, and Mexico. He still hopes to join the Brazilian national team despite his recurring injuries. His contract with Santos runs until the end of 2026.
