Israel Strikes Lebanon After Hezbollah Claims Rocket Attack

Israeli forces launched strikes on multiple locations in Lebanon following claims by Hezbollah that it fired rockets and drones into northern Israel, according to official reports.

The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) stated they targeted senior Hezbollah operatives in Beirut and southern Lebanon. "In response to Hezbollah launching projectiles towards the State of Israel, IDF forces commenced striking targets belonging to the Hezbollah terrorist organization throughout Lebanon," the IDF said in a statement.

Hezbollah, backed by Iran, asserted that the attacks were in retaliation for Israeli aggression. "In defense of Lebanon and its people, and in response to repeated Israeli attacks, the Islamic Resistance targeted the 'Mishmar HaCarmel' missile defense site of the Israeli enemy army south of occupied Haifa with a volley of guided rockets and a squadron of drones," Hezbollah said.

Lebanese Prime Minister Nawaf Salam condemned the rocket fire, stating on X, "Regardless of who is behind it, the rocket fire from southern Lebanon is irresponsible and suspicious. It endangers the security and safety of Lebanon and gives Israel pretexts to continue its attacks." He added, "We will not allow the country to be dragged into new adventures, and we will take all necessary measures to arrest the perpetrators and protect the Lebanese."

Lebanese authorities have repeatedly stated their desire to avoid involving the country in regional conflicts, particularly those arising after a U.S.-Israeli strike on Iran, which prompted a swift response from the Islamic Republic.

The National News Agency reported significant displacement from Beirut's southern suburbs and the south of Lebanon following the Israeli strikes.

This marks the most significant exchange of fire between Hezbollah and Israel since a ceasefire was brokered in November, ending over a year of hostilities.
