Chinese AI firm DeepSeek, known for its cost-effective models that disrupted global markets last year, has reportedly excluded U.S. chipmakers from early access to its upcoming flagship model. This marks a departure from standard industry practice where AI developers typically collaborate with leading chip manufacturers to optimize performance.

Instead of offering early access to companies like Nvidia and Advanced Micro Devices (AMD), DeepSeek has prioritized domestic suppliers, including Huawei Technologies, according to sources familiar with the matter. This decision grants Chinese chipmakers a head start in tailoring their hardware to DeepSeek's advanced AI software.

Typically, AI developers share preliminary versions of major models with leading chip manufacturers to ensure their software runs efficiently on widely used hardware. DeepSeek has previously worked closely with Nvidia's technical teams.

Sources indicate that Nvidia and AMD were not granted access to DeepSeek's latest model. Huawei and other Chinese chip manufacturers were given priority, receiving several weeks to optimize their processors for the new software.

The new model was expected to launch around the Lunar New Year holiday.
