Israel has authorized its military to seize additional land inside Lebanese territory, citing the need to prevent attacks on Israeli border settlements, according to Israeli officials.

The decision, coordinated with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, allows the army to advance and control more areas within Lebanon, Israeli Minister of Military Affairs Yisrael Katz announced Tuesday.

The Israeli military stated Tuesday that its forces are stationed at several strategic points in southern Lebanon as part of a “forward defense” operation to protect towns in northern Israel.

According to a statement from the military, forces from the 91st Division are operating in the southern Lebanon area and are stationed at strategic locations to bolster the forward defense system.

The move comes as tensions in the region remain elevated following reported airstrikes by Israel and the United States on Iran, which purportedly resulted in the death of Iranian Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei. In response, Tehran has allegedly launched missile and drone attacks against Israel and other countries in the region.
