Tankers Hit in Strait of Hormuz Amid Regional Tensions

Two vessels sustained damage in separate incidents in the Strait of Hormuz on Sunday, maritime security agencies reported, heightening concerns in a region already fraught with geopolitical tensions.

The incidents occurred against a backdrop of heightened tensions, although details surrounding the attacks remain unclear. The timing of the incidents coincides with increased regional volatility.

The United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO) reported that one vessel, located off the coast of Oman, was struck by an “unknown projectile above the waterline.” Initial reports indicated a fire erupted in the engine room, but authorities have since confirmed that the blaze has been extinguished.

In a separate incident, another vessel was hit by an “unknown projectile,” resulting in a fire that was subsequently put out, according to the UKMTO. The vessel is reportedly proceeding with its voyage.

Maritime security firm Vanguard Tech identified the second vessel as an oil tanker situated approximately 17 nautical miles northwest of the port of Saqr in the United Arab Emirates.

Iranian state television reported that a tanker was sinking after being hit while transiting the Strait of Hormuz. The report stated the tanker was attempting to pass through the strait “illegally.” Details remained scarce.

Footage showed thick black smoke billowing from a burning tanker.

The Strait of Hormuz is a critical artery for global oil trade, serving as a transit point for a significant portion of the world's oil and liquefied natural gas production.

On Saturday, Iran's Revolutionary Guard announced the closure of the waterway, citing dangers associated with purported U.S.-Israeli attacks.
