Russia Blocks WhatsApp, Promotes MAX Messaging Platform

Russian authorities have blocked access to WhatsApp, seeking to promote its alternative messaging platform, MAX. The move is part of a broader effort to control online communications and encourage the use of domestic technology.

The Kremlin confirmed the ban, with spokesperson Dmitry Peskov citing Meta's failure to comply with Russian government demands as the reason for the restriction. Peskov urged citizens to switch to MAX, describing it as a “modern and readily available domestic messaging option.”

Meta has acknowledged the restrictions in Russia, stating that the block prevents over 100 million users from accessing their services. The company criticized the action as regressive and detrimental to the security of Russian citizens.

The Russian government launched MAX last year, positioning it as an alternative to Western social media platforms. Mobile phone companies have been instructed to pre-install the application on all devices sold within the country.

MAX offers a range of services, including sending and receiving payments and accessing official government documents. It is considered by some to be a Russian version of the Chinese super-app WeChat.

WhatsApp was one of the few Western social media platforms still accessible in Russia. The government already blocks access to Facebook and Instagram, also owned by Meta.

Users who wish to access WhatsApp within Russia now require VPN services to mask their location. Russia has been tightening its grip on Western social media platforms since the start of the conflict in Ukraine.

Peskov indicated that the ban on WhatsApp could be lifted if Meta chooses to cooperate with the Russian government and meet its demands. The government has also been increasing pressure on Telegram.

This pressure on Telegram follows its owner, Pavel Durov's refusal to comply with a Kremlin request to ban opposition groups on the platform. Durov has since left Russia and obtained citizenship in the United Arab Emirates.
