Irbid Municipality Seizes and Destroys Spoiled Produce

Irbid, Jordan - Irbid Municipality inspectors seized and destroyed significant quantities of bananas and potatoes deemed unfit for human consumption during inspection tours of the commercial market and central vegetable market.

A total of 80 cartons of bananas and over seven tons of potatoes were confiscated due to their non-compliance with approved display and storage conditions, according to a municipal spokesperson.

Ghaith al-Tall, the municipality's media spokesperson, stated that health inspection teams observed bananas being displayed directly under sunlight within vegetable shops in the commercial market, leading to spoilage and quality degradation. He confirmed that the quantity was immediately impounded, and necessary measures were taken against the violators.

The inspection tours extended to the central vegetable market, where large quantities of potatoes showed clear signs of damage due to poor storage and prolonged display periods, al-Tall added. This prompted their seizure and destruction to safeguard public health.

The seized quantities were transported to the municipality's fertilizer station, where they were destroyed and repurposed as organic fertilizer in accordance with approved environmental and health procedures, al-Tall noted.

Al-Tall emphasized the continuation of daily inspection campaigns on markets and commercial shops, stressing the need for traders to adhere to public safety conditions and proper display mechanisms to avoid legal accountability and ensure the safety of food traded in the markets.
