Syrians Celebrate as Regional Tensions Rise After Reported Death of Iran's Khamenei

DAMASCUS - Amidst escalating regional tensions, Syrians have reportedly celebrated the death of Iran's Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei, while the Syrian government expresses concern over regional developments.

Celebrations erupted in parts of Syria following reports of Khamenei's death, with residents distributing sweets and mosques amplifying celebratory calls. This contrasted sharply with official statements expressing solidarity with Arab nations facing Iranian missile attacks.

The reported death of Khamenei followed claims by the Iranian government that he was killed in a joint U.S.-Israeli attack on Iran. These claims, and the reactions to them, have further inflamed an already tense situation in the Middle East.

Syrian President Ahmed al-Shara has reportedly engaged in phone calls with leaders from Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Iraq, and Bahrain, emphasizing the need for Arab solidarity and dialogue to de-escalate the situation. Al-Shara condemned the Iranian attacks as a threat to regional security and stability.

Residents of Al-Qusayr, near the Lebanese border, recalled the destruction of their city and the displacement caused by Iranian-backed forces.

Explosions were heard in Damascus, attributed to Israeli interceptions of Iranian missiles, further underscoring the volatile situation.
