The Israeli military said early Monday it targeted Hezbollah operatives in Lebanon, including senior members in Beirut, escalating cross-border hostilities.

The strikes followed a barrage of rockets launched by the Iran-backed Hezbollah group, prompting a wave of Israeli retaliatory attacks “across Lebanon,” according to a military statement.

“In response to Hezbollah’s firing of projectiles towards the State of Israel,” the Israeli forces commenced striking Hezbollah targets “throughout Lebanon,” the statement read.

Hezbollah claimed responsibility for launching rockets and drones into Israel, citing retaliation for what it called the assassination of Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei. However, other sources indicate the attacks were in response to repeated Israeli aggressions.

“In defense of Lebanon and its people, and in response to the repeated Israeli attacks, the resistance targeted… with a volley of guided missiles and a squadron of drones the Mishmar HaCarmel site for missile defense belonging to the Israeli enemy army, south of the occupied city of Haifa,” Hezbollah said in a statement.
