ByteDance, the Chinese company behind TikTok, has launched its latest artificial intelligence model, Doubao 2.0, escalating the competition in the global AI landscape.

The company said Doubao 2.0 is designed to perform complex, real-world tasks through multiple, independent steps, moving beyond traditional verbal interaction.

ByteDance is positioning Doubao 2.0 as a cost-effective alternative for developers and businesses, emphasizing its reduced usage costs.

The company is aiming to secure its leading position in the domestic market, where Doubao currently boasts over 155 million weekly active users, surpassing local competitors.

The Pro version of Doubao 2.0 possesses advanced reasoning capabilities, positioning it as a direct competitor to leading global models such as OpenAI's GPT-5.2 and Google's Gemini 3 Pro, according to ByteDance.

In addition to text-based models, ByteDance also introduced Seedance 2.0, a video generation model that simulates realistic physics and maintains character consistency across multiple shots.

The launch of Doubao 2.0 can be viewed as a preemptive move to avoid a repeat of last year's scenario, when the startup DeepSeek gained attention with its low-cost model during the Chinese New Year period.

However, ByteDance faces accusations of intellectual property rights infringement, with reports indicating legal challenges from Disney and artistic associations.

These entities allege that the Chinese company has utilized extensive libraries of copyrighted content to train its models, particularly in video and audio generation.

Doubao 2.0 represents a shift in China's AI strategy, moving from imitation to leadership through executive models capable of operating at low cost, potentially disrupting the global cloud services and generative AI market.
