Marrakech's scented candle workshop, Kôté Bougie, is illuminating homes worldwide, driven by a commitment to preserving Moroccan craftsmanship and empowering local artisans.
With a focus on sustainability and authenticity, Kôté Bougie has seen its revenue reach approximately $4 million, with 75% of sales coming from international markets across Europe, Asia, and the Americas. The brand aspires to reach $10 million in revenue in the coming years.
The company collaborates with skilled artisans, providing them with a steady income and preserving traditional crafts threatened with extinction. Within the Sidi Ghanem workshop, a dedicated artisan specializes in shaping copper into new forms, embodying the brand's philosophy of slow, meticulous production.
Artisan Nour Eddine emphasized the importance of allowing each piece the time it needs to mature, focusing on slow, meticulous handwork that machines cannot replicate. Workshop supervisor Moulay Hicham El Idrissi noted the family atmosphere and comfortable pace of work, which increases slightly as the weekly export deadline approaches.
Omar, the owner, highlights that this artisan patience justifies the product's higher market value, with some luxury sets inlaid with copper or fine clay selling for around $400 (4,000 dirhams). Each piece can take several days to complete.
The story of Kôté Bougie began over two decades ago with Omar's mother, Saeeda al-Qadiri, who sought to create a new spirit for Moroccan candles. In 2003, she began creating exclusive designs, and two years later, Omar suggested incorporating traditional craftsmanship to showcase the skills of local artisans.
In 2013, Omar launched the brand with a professional visual identity and website, positioning the Moroccan product in international markets. By the following year, Kôté Bougie was showcasing its creations at the Maison et Objet fair in Paris, presenting Moroccan craftsmanship to global artisans.
In 2017, a chance encounter with Radia, a raffia weaver from Essaouira, led to a new chapter in the brand's story, with more than 30 women now weaving unique coverings for the candles within a specialized cooperative. Omar emphasizes that the goal extends beyond mere production, focusing on recognizing skilled handwork as a cornerstone for empowering Moroccan women towards financial independence and creativity.
To enhance the product, Kôté Bougie partnered with a specialized team in Grasse, the world's perfume capital, to create exclusive fragrances that transport customers through Morocco with citrus, floral, or warm oriental notes. This focus on quality is coupled with environmental consciousness, using natural materials like soy wax and cotton wicks to produce eco-friendly candles that do not emit black smoke.
Shafiqa, who works at the workshop preparing the scented candles, expresses pride in crafting items that will travel to distant places, illuminating spaces far beyond her reach and carrying a piece of their craft to international capitals.
Despite financial and logistical challenges, Omar affirms that Kôté Bougie's success stems from a commitment to offering a unique, high-quality product that respects authenticity and sustainability. Today, this dedication has been recognized nationally with an export award.
As the sun sets in Marrakech, the lights dim in the Sidi Ghanem workshop, but the wicks of Kôté Bougie candles remain lit, carrying the city's essence and the spirit of its artisans across borders.
While customers may not know the names of Shafiqa, Radia, or Nour Eddine, they will recognize that each candle embodies a Moroccan story told with love and skill when they touch the raffia and inhale the scents of orange blossom and mint. Each piece is a silent ambassador, connecting the small workshop in Marrakech with distant capitals, narrating tales of heritage, innovation, and the patience and creativity of Moroccan artisans.
In these bright corners of the city, craftsmanship is embodied in its most beautiful form, where the spirit of fragrances never fades, and creativity paves its way to the world.
