Shipping giant Maersk has announced it will reroute vessels away from the Strait of Hormuz, a critical chokepoint for global oil and trade, citing escalating tensions in the region.

The Danish company stated on Sunday that ships traveling from the Middle East to India will now be redirected via the Mediterranean Sea. Furthermore, vessels en route from the Middle East to the East Coast of the United States will be rerouted around the Cape of Good Hope.

Maersk also specified that it would temporarily suspend voyages through both the Suez Canal and the Strait of Hormuz, while continuing to accept cargo bound for the Middle East region.
