Lionel Messi's hamstring strain has forced Inter Miami to postpone their friendly match in Puerto Rico, the club announced. The Argentine star felt discomfort during the team's 2-2 draw against Barcelona SC in Ecuador last Saturday, prompting further medical evaluation.
The extent of Messi's injury remains uncertain, with the club stating his return to training will depend on his progress in the coming days. Initial assessments revealed a strain in his left hamstring.
"Unfortunately, I felt some muscle discomfort in the last game," Messi said in a statement released by the team. The eight-time Ballon d'Or winner also addressed fans in Puerto Rico, expressing his disappointment. "We were looking forward to seeing you, so we have been working with the club to find an alternative date so that we can travel and play in Puerto Rico," he stated. "We know how excited you are to see Inter Miami play, and it would be a pleasure for us to make that happen soon."
Inter Miami was scheduled to play against Independiente del Valle of Ecuador in Puerto Rico. The match has now been rescheduled for February 26, just three days before their Major League Soccer (MLS) season opener against Real Salt Lake.
The reigning Leagues Cup champions are set to kick off their 2024 MLS campaign against Real Salt Lake on February 21. Messi's availability for that match is now in question.
