Mastercard has introduced an AI-powered shopping agent capable of autonomously completing online transactions, marking a potential shift in digital commerce.
The unveiling took place at the AI Impact Summit in India, where the agent successfully executed a transaction, signaling a move towards "agentic commerce," according to a statement from Mastercard.
This new technology aims to streamline the online shopping experience by allowing an AI agent to handle the entire process, from product search and website verification to secure payment processing, without direct user intervention.
Gautam Aggarwal, Mastercard’s Division President for South Asia, explained that this technology integrates various advanced technologies to simplify digital shopping. He noted the previous lengthy process involving account creation, searching, comparing, and payment, can now be fully automated through these AI agents.
The successful demonstration involved collaboration with Axis Bank and RBL Bank, whose cards were used in the trial. Digital payment platforms such as Razorpay, Cashfree, Juspay, and PayU provided the necessary technical infrastructure for the transactions.
Mastercard envisions a future where AI agents redefine the consumer-technology relationship, offering a more seamless and efficient online shopping experience.
