Meta Platforms is preparing to launch its first smartwatch, aiming to broaden its range of electronic devices and reduce reliance on competing smartphone operating systems.

The new smartwatch is designed to provide users with an additional method for engaging with the metaverse.

The company has revived its smartwatch project, previously known as 'Malibu 2,' with a launch planned later this year. The device will feature health-tracking capabilities and an integrated Meta AI assistant.

Meta had previously explored the possibility of launching a smartwatch around five years ago, even considering versions equipped with three cameras. However, the project was halted in 2022 as part of broader spending cuts within its Reality Labs unit.

Meta declined to comment on the report.

The announcement signals a resurgence in wearable devices, fueled by advancements in artificial intelligence. Companies are increasingly focused on launching devices equipped with modern technologies, particularly those emphasizing health and fitness applications.
