Jordan's electricity supply remains secure despite gas disruptions, according to a Jordanian official. Any additional electricity Jordan receives from Egypt depends on daily operational capacity.

The official clarified that recent gas outages have not impacted Jordan's ability to generate electricity.

The energy exchange agreement between Jordan and Egypt was renewed for 2024. Both countries have agreed to conduct an economic and technical feasibility study for a project to strengthen the grid connection to 2,000 megawatts. They are also working to secure funding for this study.

Egypt has secured funding from the Arab Bank for Development to appoint a consultant to conduct technical and economic feasibility studies to increase the grid connection capacity from 550 megawatts to 2,000 megawatts.

Jordan and Egypt have been exchanging electricity since 1999. The Jordanian and Egyptian power grids are connected by a 400-kilovolt submarine cable that runs 13 km across the Gulf of Aqaba, with a capacity of 550 megawatts. This connection is part of the eight-country electrical interconnection group, which includes Jordan, Egypt, Iraq, Syria, Lebanon, Palestine, Libya, and Turkey.

Egypt has significantly increased its electrical capacity since 2014, making it capable of exporting electricity. Egypt also has an ambitious plan to increase the proportion of renewable energy in its electrical capacity to 35% by 2035.
