Amazon Web Services (AWS), the cloud computing division of Amazon, is grappling with service disruptions in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) and Bahrain following an incident at a data center in the UAE. The company reported power and connectivity issues affecting its Middle East operations and anticipates that full recovery could take several hours.

The disruptions have impacted two availability zones in the UAE, which are clusters of data centers, leaving them without power. AWS initially reported that the incident was triggered when unspecified “objects” struck a data center, causing sparks and a fire that led to a power shutdown.

AWS confirmed that a local power issue affected another availability zone in the UAE. While the company acknowledged recovery in the UAE region earlier in the day, it advised customers to utilize services in other regions, emphasizing its ongoing efforts to restore power and connectivity.

The company has not confirmed or denied whether the incident in the UAE is related to reported Iranian strikes targeting neighboring Gulf countries, including the UAE and Bahrain, in response to alleged U.S. and Israeli attacks on Iran.

Separately, Abu Dhabi Commercial Bank (ADCB) reported technical issues affecting some of its platforms and mobile app users. It remains unclear whether this outage is connected to the AWS service disruptions.

AWS stated that both the UAE and Bahrain regions are experiencing outages and cited local power problems in both areas. The company expects full recovery to take several hours.
