A new application has been developed to detect smart glasses, such as Meta Ray-Ban and Snapchat Spectacles, addressing rising concerns about privacy and unauthorized surveillance.

The app, created by independent developer Yves Gagnon, identifies smart glasses without needing to connect to them directly. This innovation comes in response to growing worries about the misuse of smart glasses for surreptitious monitoring and recording of individuals.

The developer views his application as a small step in countering surveillance technology, according to a report. The app detects low-frequency Bluetooth signals emitted by smart glasses and alerts users to their presence.

Despite its potential, the application faces technical limitations. It cannot differentiate between smart glasses and augmented reality glasses, nor can it identify smart glasses from lesser-known manufacturers or those commonly found in Chinese markets. Additionally, the app is currently available exclusively on the Android platform, with an iOS version still in development.

Concerns about privacy violations associated with smart glasses have been escalating. These devices are often indistinguishable from regular glasses, making it easy to use them discreetly in private settings.

In one instance, Meta Ray-Ban glasses were reportedly used to record a woman without her knowledge. Users have also been modifying their glasses to disable the recording indicator light, further exacerbating privacy issues.

Meta is planning to integrate facial recognition technology and direct AI connectivity into future generations of its smart glasses. This move has heightened concerns about potential misuse and privacy breaches.
