Atalanta secured a dramatic 4-1 victory over Borussia Dortmund on Wednesday, propelled by a late penalty that sealed their place in the Champions League round of 16 with a 4-3 aggregate win.
Lazar Samardzic converted the decisive penalty in stoppage time, sending the Italian side through after a hard-fought contest.
The match turned decisively against Dortmund when Ramy Bensebaini received a red card for a second bookable offense, striking an Atalanta player in the head inside the penalty area.
Atalanta will now face either Arsenal or Bayern Munich in the round of 16, with the draw scheduled for Friday.
Earlier in the match, Gianluca Scamacca and Davide Zappacosta scored at the beginning and end of the first half, giving the home side a commanding lead. Mario Pasalic then extended Atalanta's advantage early in the second half.
Karim Adeyemi pulled a goal back for Dortmund in the 75th minute, leveling the aggregate score at 3-3 and setting up a tense finale before Atalanta's late winner.
