Apple has launched the iPhone 17e, a budget-friendly smartphone, starting at $599 with an increased base storage of 256GB, the company said on Monday, as it aims to maintain its position in the highly competitive global mobile phone market.

The iPhone 17e is powered by the A19 chip, the latest generation of Apple's silicon, built using a 3-nanometer process, representing a notable performance upgrade for the company's budget-friendly devices.

The device also incorporates Apple's new C1X modem, which the company claims delivers faster cellular speeds with reduced power consumption, according to Reuters.

For the first time in the 'e' series, the iPhone 17e supports MagSafe technology, granting users access to Apple's magnetic ecosystem of chargers and accessories. This enables wireless charging speeds of up to 15W, a significant improvement over the slower Qi wireless charging standard in the previous model.

Customers in over 70 countries and regions will be able to pre-order the iPhone 17e starting at 6:15 a.m. Pacific Time on Wednesday, with the device scheduled to go on sale on March 11.

Some analysts suggest that offering increased storage at the same starting price effectively constitutes a price cut, as customers previously had to pay extra for the larger capacity.

This move comes amidst rising memory chip prices and a global shortage, indicating that Apple is prepared to absorb some component cost pressures to make its budget model more appealing.

By providing more storage at the same price point, Apple positions the iPhone 17e as a stronger value proposition as it seeks to attract new users and defend its market share against competitors facing greater supply constraints.

Apple also unveiled a redesigned iPad Air equipped with the new M4 chip on Monday. The 11-inch model starts at $599, while the larger 13-inch version starts at $799.
