Jordan's tablet imports experienced a shift in the past year, with a decrease in the number of devices brought into the country but an increase in their overall value, according to data.
Approximately 389,000 tablets were imported into Jordan last year, totaling 58 million dinars, data from the Jordanian Customs Department, based on certified customs invoices, revealed.
Ahmed Alloush, head of the Association of Vision for Cellular Device and Accessories Investors, noted that the average price per device reached about 149 dinars in the past year. This increase in value, despite a lower number of imported devices compared to the prior year, is attributed to rising average prices in manufacturing countries, Alloush explained.
In comparison, the value of imports in the prior year amounted to 45 million dinars, with an average device price of approximately 97 dinars. This meant that roughly 464,000 devices were imported that year, about 75,000 more than the past year. However, the average price saw a notable increase, contributing to the higher overall import bill.
Analyzing data from previous years reveals natural fluctuations in market volumes. In 2023, around 310,000 devices were imported, while 2022 saw approximately 451,000 devices. Imports in 2021 totaled about 359,000 devices, valued at 49 million dinars. In 2020, approximately 314,000 devices were imported, with a value of 38 million dinars. Imports reached 196,000 devices valued at 21 million dinars in 2019, and 172,000 devices valued at 29 million dinars in 2018.
Average prices in exporting countries provide context for this shift, Alloush stated. In the past year, average prices for economic-range tablets in China were about $139, while mid-range tablets reached about $511, and high-end tablets exceeded $960. In South Korea, the average prices were about $259 for the economic range, about $542 for the mid-range, and over $1,000 for the high-end.
These figures indicate that any shift in imports from the economic to the mid-range or high-end category directly impacts the average price in the local market. Therefore, the rise in the average device price in Jordan to about 149 dinars reflects an increase in the proportion of devices with higher specifications, Alloush concluded.
