Gas prices surged in
Europe on Monday as workers at a major export project in Australia threatened
to strike if a wage agreement is not reached in negotiations that begin on
Wednesday.
The price of gas
futures for the following month on the Dutch gas exchange jumped 18% to 42.90
euros per megawatt-hour.
According to
Bloomberg News, the strike could begin on September 2 if Woodside Energy Group,
which operates the gas plant, does not offer a suitable agreement, as well as
Chevron Corp. plants where workers began voting last week on the possibility of
organizing strikes.
The agency pointed
out that any disruptions to gas supplies in Australia could affect 10% of the
world's liquefied natural gas exports.
