King Mohammed VI receives written letter from President Denis Sassou Nguesso of the Congo

Minister of Foreign Affairs, African Cooperation and Moroccans Abroad, Nasser Bourita, received, on Tuesday in Rabat, Minister of the Environment, Sustainable Development and the Congo Basin, Coordinator of the Climate Commission for the Congo Basin, Arlette Soudan- Nonault, with a written letter to King Mohammed VI.

In a statement to the press following her meeting with Bourita, Ms. Soudan Nonault explained that her visit to Morocco comes within the framework of preparation for the Summit of the Three Global Forest Basins, scheduled to be held next October in Brazzaville.

In this context, Sudan Nonault highly commended the commitment of His Majesty King Mohammed VI to biodiversity and climate, particularly in the African continent, highlighting that His Majesty was behind the initiative to establish three climate committees on the occasion of the African Action Summit, held on November 16, 2016 on the sidelines of the 22nd session of the Conference of the  Parties of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP 22).

She said that King Mohammed VI is the "patron of the three climatic committees of the African continental region", noting that His Majesty had been following the step by step climate committee of the Congo Basin since its establishment.

She emphasised that under the leadership of His Majesty King Mohammed VI, Morocco is a "major partner" within the framework of the Climate Commission, along with 15 nation of the Congo Basin, which represent 10 percent of the world's biodiverse.

And she stressed "the need for this coalition led by His Majesty the King so that we can speak with one voice in the framework of South-South cooperation, without forgetting to involve the countries of the North," noting that the climate emergency requires mobilizing funding for integration and sovereignty projects that meet the aspirations of the region's population.

The Congolese minister pointed out that the Brazzaville Summit of the Three Basins of Global African Biodiversity "will enable us to engage in the dynamism of the Paris Agreement."

She added that the Brazzaville meeting will also address the Amazon Basin and Borneo Mekong Basin in Southeast Asia, which represent 80 percent of global biodiversity.
