An awareness workshop was held in the Aqaba Marine Reserve on Tuesday on "management of electrical and electronic waste" in partnership between the Environment Directorate of the Aqaba Special Region Authority and the Regional Commission for the Preservation of the Environment of the Red Sea and Gulf of Aden, in the presence of a number of supervisors of environmental clubs for the schools of the Ministry of Education and stakeholders in Aqaba.

The Director of the Environment Directorate, Taghreed Al-Maaytah, confirmed that waste management today has become a source of concern for the countries of the world as it threatens human health and the environment together, as it contains harmful and highly toxic materials if they are disposed of randomly and in unsafe ways.

Al-Maaytah added that this workshop came as a continuation of the work of the electronic waste management project, which was launched in 2018 in cooperation between the authority, the Ministry of Environment and the regional commission.

In turn, the representative of the Regional Authority for the Protection of the Environment of the Red Sea and Gulf of Aden, Bashar Al-Batayneh, spoke about the authority, its role and programs in the field of dealing with electronic waste and treating it in sound environmental ways in the Aqaba region, in addition to raising community awareness about the dangers of electronic waste to human health and the environment among various groups of the local community.

Those concerned in the Environment Directorate reviewed the environmental awareness role of the project and the most prominent materials that were produced and published during the awareness campaign, in addition to a detailed explanation of e-waste and its association with persistent organic pollutants and their danger to public health and the environment.

It is worth noting that the Aqaba Protected Area has announced its readiness to receive educational and informative field visits for school students with the aim of promoting the Aqaba Marine Reserve.
