Two people were killed on Monday by a landslide in northeastern Japan's Yamagata Prefecture, Japanese authorities said.

NHK quoted officials in the prefecture as saying that two bodies were found and reported missing in the landslide that hit the city on Saturday.

According to NHK, the landslide occurred on a mountain in the city of Tsuruoka in Yamagata Prefecture, damaging about 10 buildings.

The region's meteorological office said the city had seen a record amount of rain and snow.
The Japanese authorities had earlier warned of heavily increased snowfall in large areas of the country.
