The United Nations has warned of renewed tribal violence in villages in the Beleil area of south Darfur state, which has killed at least 11 people and left thousands fleeing.

The United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) in Sudan confirmed in a statement on Tuesday the deployment of security forces, which made the security situation calm but unpredictable, noting that these events led to the flight of 16.2 thousand people to displacement camps.

The Humanitarian Aid Commission pointed to the need of the displaced for humanitarian assistance after losing their assets and food commodities during the burning of their villages.

The statement said that the burned villages, inhabited by 10,000 people from the Dajo tribe, were returned to them from camps for displaced people in the context of voluntary return or as part of seasonal return.

A total of 292,000 people live in the Beleil locality, including 246,000 in need of humanitarian assistance, with 43,000 residents of the Beleil locality expected to reach a crisis level above food insecurity levels.
