Jordanian Al-Nashef takes over the position of the High Commissioner for Human Rights temporarily

The United Nations
announced, on Wednesday that the Jordanian Deputy High Commissioner for Human
Rights Nada Yousef Al-Nashef will
temporarily replace her pending the appointment of a successor whose term
expires on Wednesday Michelle Bachelet.
"Tomorrow is the last day for Michelle
Bachelet. I do not expect an announcement tomorrow" of her succession,
said UN spokesman Stephane Dujarric at a press conference.
He added that until a
replacement is announced and "as of September 1, her duties will be
assumed by Nada Yousef Al-Nashef, Deputy High Commissioner for Human
Rights."
In response to a
question about when (UN Secretary-General) Antonio Guterres might announce his
choice for this sensitive position, Dujarric indicated that he could not
"predict". "We are trying
to do it as quickly and diligently as possible," he said.
The person chosen by
Guterres must be approved by the United Nations General Assembly.
Bachelet took office
on September 1, 2018 In June, she announced that she would not seek a second
term, preferring to spend time with her family and her country.
It is noteworthy that Al-Nashef has held the
position of Deputy High Commissioner for Human Rights since the beginning of
2020.
