The World Health Organization (WHO) recorded 2,103 confirmed
Monkeypox infections and one potential case, including one fatality, in 42
countries across five WHO regions as of mid-June (the Americas, Africa, Europe,
the Eastern Mediterranean, and the Western Pacific regions).
According to the organization's current update on the spread
of Monkeypox virus, "until the confirmation of one case of Monkeypox in a
country is an outbreak," the unexpected appearance of Monkeypox in various
places in the initial absence of epidemiological links to areas that had
previously reported the existence of virus indicated that there might have been
unreported cases of transmission for some time.
As this is the first time that multiple cases and groups of
Monkeypox have been reported simultaneously in various nations across the World
Health Organization's highly varied geographical areas, the organization
considers the risks to be moderate globally.
