The government debt balance decreased in January by 244 million dinars

The Ministry
of Finance announced that the government debt balance decreased last January by
244 million dinars as a result of the government's amortization of local bonds
worth 311 million dinars.
The ministry
said in a press statement on Tuesday that the balance of government debt
witnessed a decrease after excluding what the Social Security Investment Fund
holds from its level at the end of 2021 by 244 million dinars to reach about 28519.3
million dinars, or 88.3% of the estimated gross domestic product for the month
of January from 2022.
The ministry
indicated that the decrease is due to the government’s payment of outstanding
bonds and treasury bills in the amount of 311 million dinars in exchange for
new issuances in the amount of 175 million dinars, and this led to a decrease
in the internal debt by 136 million dinars, as this constitutes an injection of
liquidity in the local market, and the National Electricity Company also
paid The amounts owed and the decrease
in the bank facilities of the company and the Water Authority amounted to a
total of 40 million dinars.
