US threatens to impose 100% tariffs on French goods

- The United States has threatened to impose tariffs of up 100% on French imports, as a retaliation for France's digital tax set to hit US giants Google, Apple, Facebook, Amazon and other major tech companies.

The additional tariffs will affect wine and cheese, starting from mid-January, after a report by the office of the United States Trade Representative said on Monday that the new French tax (GAFA) is a discrimination against the United States.

"American authorities are also exploring whether to open investigations into the digital services taxes of Austria, Italy and Turkey," U.S. Trade Representative Robert Lighthizer said in a statement.
