Nine people were killed and 10 others injured late Sunday in a coal mine accident caused by a tremor in northeast China's Jilin province .
The workers were trapped in a shaft after the tremor jolted the coal mine under the management of Jilin Longjiabao Mining Co, in Jiutai city, in Changchun New Area, the state-run China news agency (Xinhua) reported on Monday.
The burst occured at around 8:00 p.m. and caused an earthquake measuring 2.3 on the Richter scale, according to Xinhua. The injured workers are receiving treatment in the nearby hospital and face no life-threatening injuries.
An emergency response has been activated and work teams have been dispatched to assist rescue work.
The cause of the accident is still under investigation.
