More than 70 people were intercepted as they crossed the English Channel on eight boats, the British government said Sunday.

Secretary of State for the Home Department Sajid Javid said the number of migrants crossing the Channel after midnight is "deeply concerning," adding that he is receiving regular updates on the matter.

"Those who choose to make this dangerous journey across one of the busiest shipping lanes in the world are putting their lives in grave danger, and I will continue to do all I can to stop them," he added.

Javid pointed out that he agreed on a joint action plan with his French counterpart and increased activity out of the Joint Coordination and Information Centre in Calais.
