BEIRUT - The Lebanese government convened an emergency session on Monday to address escalating tensions along the southern border, following an exchange of fire between Hezbollah and Israeli forces.
The meeting, called by Prime Minister Nawaf Salam, took place at the Presidential Palace to discuss the implications of the overnight developments and to formulate necessary measures, according to a statement.
Prime Minister Salam described the launch of projectiles from southern Lebanon into Israel as an irresponsible and suspicious act that endangers Lebanon's security.
The Israeli military said it launched a wave of strikes against Hezbollah targets throughout Lebanon on Monday, following the rocket attack claimed by the group.
According to the Israeli military, the strikes were in response to Hezbollah's firing of projectiles toward Israel, with Israeli forces targeting Hezbollah assets across Lebanon.
Hezbollah claimed responsibility for launching rockets and drones into Israel overnight, stating it was in retaliation for the assassination of Iranian Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei; however, this claim has not been independently verified and is widely disputed.
