Ukrainian skeleton racer Vladyslav Heraskevych has been barred from competing in the Olympics after refusing to remove a helmet displaying images related to the war in his country.

The International Olympic Committee (IOC) confirmed that Heraskevych is not permitted to participate in the games after he declined to adhere to the IOC's guidelines regarding expressions by athletes.

According to a statement released by the IOC, the decision was made after Heraskevych refused to comply with regulations regarding acceptable attire and equipment during the competition.

A spokesperson for the Ukrainian Olympic Committee told AFP that Heraskevych had been excluded from the event.

The helmet in question reportedly featured images commemorating victims of the war in Ukraine with Russia. The IOC has specific rules about political statements.

Heraskevych's exclusion highlights the ongoing tension between individual expression and the IOC's regulations regarding political statements at the Olympic Games.
