COPENHAGEN - Maersk, the Danish shipping giant, has announced it will reroute vessels traveling from the Middle East to India via the Cape of Good Hope, while ships heading from the region to the U.S. East Coast will also take the longer route around Africa, citing heightened security risks.
The company stated it will temporarily halt voyages through the Suez Canal and the Bab el-Mandeb Strait, but will continue to accept shipments bound for the Middle East, according to a statement released Sunday.
Maersk, the world's second-largest container shipping company, attributed its decision to a "deteriorating security situation in the Middle East following an escalation of military conflict," the statement said, in the wake of reported attacks in the region.
The company also confirmed the continued suspension of all vessel transits through the Strait of Hormuz until further notice. As a result, services calling at ports in the Arabian Gulf may experience delays, route changes, or schedule adjustments.
