The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) has issued a stark warning that the escalating conflict in the Middle East poses a grave threat to civilians. The organization emphasized that any further expansion of hostilities would severely undermine the ability to deliver humanitarian aid.

“The ICRC and Red Crescent societies, based in Geneva, serve as a crucial safeguard for international humanitarian law, which seeks to mitigate the impact of armed conflicts and protects those not involved in hostilities.”

Mirjana Spoljaric, President of the ICRC, stressed the critical need for adherence to the rules of war, which mandate the protection of civilians and civilian infrastructure. She specifically called for schools and hospitals to remain safe havens, free from attack.

“Expanding hostilities across the Middle East put civilians at severe risk, and dragging the region – and beyond – into yet another large-scale armed conflict will impede any humanitarian response,” Spoljaric said, according to Agence France-Presse.

Spoljaric also reminded all parties of their obligation to protect medical personnel and first responders, including the Red Cross and Red Crescent societies, ensuring they can perform their duties safely.

Echoing these concerns, Iran's ambassador to Geneva, Ali Bahreini, conveyed a message to Spoljaric asserting that recent actions by the U.S. and Israel constitute serious violations of international humanitarian law.

Bahreini stated that the deliberate and indiscriminate targeting of civilians and infrastructure, including hospitals, medical facilities, and schools, represents a grave breach of the fundamental principles of distinction and proportionality enshrined in the Geneva Conventions, which form the core of international humanitarian law. He urged the ICRC president to condemn these strikes and reiterated Iran's commitment to upholding international humanitarian law and expecting full respect for the Geneva Conventions.
