Amazon Web Services (AWS) confirmed that its cloud computing facilities in the United Arab Emirates and Bahrain were directly hit by drone strikes, resulting in significant damage and disruption of key cloud services.

The company stated that two of its availability zones were disrupted, impacting major services. A third facility in Bahrain sustained infrastructure damage due to a nearby strike, according to statements made to Bloomberg.

The attacks caused structural damage to buildings and power outages to servers, leading to temporary service interruptions. Fires also broke out in some centers as a result of the strikes, triggering water extinguishing systems and causing additional damage to equipment, Amazon said.

These attacks are reportedly part of a wave of drone and missile strikes launched by Iran towards several Gulf countries in response to a U.S.-Israeli attack that allegedly killed Iranian Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei.

The incident marks the first time that data centers of a major U.S. technology company have been directly hit in a military conflict. The UAE has been striving to become a regional hub for computing and artificial intelligence.
