Interior Minister Salamah Hammad on Wednesday discussed with UNICEF Jordan's Representative Ettie Higgins, means of boosting bilateral cooperation and the role of the UN agency in supporting refugees, and their host communities, mainly in the fields of health and education.
The minister stressed the importance of making a balance in the provision of support between the refugees and their host communities and the need for the international community to shoulder its responsibilities towards the refugee crisis and not to leave the burden of hosting them on Jordan alone.
"The support should be in line with the actual and real needs of host communities and refugees," he added.
Hammad pointed to the need to find and establish productive and quality pilot projects that contribute to finding employment opportunities for refugee hosting communities to alleviate the burden resulting from hosting refugees which affected the various vital and service sectors.
Higgins praised the role of the Jordanian government and the Ministry of Interior in supporting the refugees and meeting their needs, stressing the importance of the initiatives undertaken by the UN organizations in Jordan, especially UNICEF, in refugee hosting communities and in various fields.
