Jordan's Department of Islamic Affairs has cautioned against relying on artificial intelligence and social media platforms as primary sources for religious edicts, emphasizing that these tools cannot replace qualified religious scholars and jurists.
In a religious ruling concerning the use of AI in issuing fatwas, the department clarified that AI technologies gather information available on various fatwa websites without accurately distinguishing between correct and incorrect information. This process may inadvertently include inaccurate references or data, potentially leading users to incorrect conclusions.
The department further noted that AI programs cannot understand the specific circumstances of individuals seeking religious guidance, a crucial aspect of the fatwa process. A qualified mufti relies on asking questions and seeking clarifications to fully understand the context surrounding an issue before issuing an appropriate Sharia ruling, as fatwas can vary based on individual circumstances.
The authority stated that specialists and Sharia researchers may use AI technologies for reference purposes, but they must consult reliable scholars to obtain fatwas from authentic and trusted sources.
The department underscored the importance of seeking religious guidance from qualified experts who can provide accurate and context-specific rulings, ensuring adherence to established Islamic principles.
