Jordan Urges De-escalation Amid Regional Tensions After Iranian Actions

Jordan's Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs, Ayman Safadi, has engaged in a series of phone calls with counterparts from the Netherlands, Turkey, and Azerbaijan to address the escalating regional tensions and their security, economic, and political repercussions.

In discussions with Dutch Foreign Minister Hanke Bruins Slot, Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan, and Azerbaijani Foreign Minister Jeyhun Bayramov, Safadi emphasized the urgent need for de-escalation and diplomatic efforts to restore stability in the region.

Safadi condemned the Iranian attacks on Saudi Arabia and other Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) member states, reiterating Jordan's rejection of any violations of international law and national sovereignty. He affirmed Jordan's unwavering commitment to protecting its own security and the safety of its citizens, as well as its solidarity with the Gulf states in the face of aggression. The foreign ministers reciprocated by expressing their countries' solidarity with Jordan.

During the conversations, Safadi also addressed the situation in the occupied Palestinian territories, stressing that the suffering in Gaza should not be overlooked amidst the focus on Iran. He emphasized the importance of ending the humanitarian crisis in the Gaza Strip and fully implementing all aspects of the U.S. President Joe Biden's plan for Gaza.

Safadi cautioned against Israel's actions in the West Bank, including annexation attempts, as violations of international law and impediments to peace. Furthermore, he asserted that the continued closure of the Al-Aqsa Mosque and the prevention of Muslim worshippers from accessing it constitute an infringement on religious freedom that warrants a firm international response.
