DJI Redefines Aerial Photography with Avata 360 Drone

DJI has officially announced its newest drone, the DJI Avata 360, a move eagerly anticipated by content creators and FPV (First Person View) drone professionals.

The Avata 360 represents a completely new hybrid category, blending the agility of FPV drones with the expansive capabilities of 360-degree panoramic photography, eliminating the trade-off between a narrow field of view and separate 360 cameras.

The Avata 360 features a design distinct from previous Avata models. Instead of a traditional Cine-whoop structure, DJI has adopted a more dynamic frame with a dual-lens imaging system.

A key innovation is the “Intelligent Rotation Axis,” which allows the drone’s camera to switch between traditional forward flight and 360-degree spherical capture by rotating the lenses 90 degrees, creating an “Invisible Drone Effect” where the drone body is absent from the footage.

The drone is equipped with advanced sensing technology, including 1/1.3-inch or 1/1-inch sensors in professional versions, providing exceptional low-light performance and color dynamics surpassing previous 360 drones.

The camera supports 8K video recording at 50fps in 360 mode and 4K at 120fps in traditional FPV mode for fast-action shots. RockSteady 4.0+ technology ensures stability during maneuvers and aerial acrobatics, along with automatic horizon correction.

For the first time in a drone of this size, DJI has integrated a front-facing LiDAR system with visual sensors for 360-degree obstacle avoidance. This system enhances safety and provides novice pilots with greater confidence when flying in tight or congested spaces, such as forests or indoor environments.

The Avata 360 supports the O4 Plus transmission system, offering 1080p visual feed with near-zero latency up to 20 km.

Despite the high power consumption of panoramic processing, DJI has equipped the drone with a 38.6Wh battery, providing up to 25 minutes of flight time, which is impressive for the FPV category.

The drone is fully compatible with Goggles 3 and the more affordable Goggles N3, as well as the RC Motion 3 controller, which enables control via hand movements.

DJI offers the Avata 360 in several packages to suit different budgets, starting with the basic (drone-only) package. The Fly More package includes the Goggles N3. A professional package includes Goggles 3 and three batteries.

Industry observers suggest that the DJI Avata 360 offers content creators a solution, allowing them to “fly first, choose the angle later.” Photographers are no longer limited to what they see in front of them, but can direct the camera to any angle during editing, opening up creative possibilities that previously required exceptional flying skills or expensive equipment.
